One aspect of normal foot alignment, with regard to the bony anatomy relationships, is that the talus, which is the bone in the ankle joint, lines up with the first metatarsal.

This relationship may not be preserved in cases of
--flatfoot (pes planus) or
--high arched foot (pes cavus).
